To the east of Auckland, this quiet spot is suitable for kitesurfers and windsurfers of all experience levels.
The beach is nice and sandy, but it's only small at about 100 m long. Fortunately it backs onto a reserve, which means there is plenty of room on which to land a kite. There are never any crowds here, and the water is warm in summer at around 25° C. Winter temperatures are much cooler, with the water coming in at about 15° C.
Conditions are best when the wind is blowing from the north, north-east or north-west, and this is most likely to be from September to November. These winds do blow all year round, but aren't necessarily the prevailing wind direction, so just check the conditions out before you arrive. The speed is good, and will be between 15 and 25 knots most of the time. The water is shallow and clean, and the best conditions are found at high tide although it is still possible to ride at low tide as long as you are happy with a walk of about 100 m out from the beach. The water is usually flat, maybe with a slight chop if the wind is up.
This spot is about 40 or 50 km from Auckland, where most people base themselves due to the good range of facilities it has. Right here you'll find plenty of parking close to the beach, and there are public toilets too. The town of Beachlands is just to the west and has a couple of places to eat and drink.
Wear boots as there are a lot of oysters on the bottom and their shells can be sharp. Apart from that, just enjoy this nice quiet little spot.
